Workshop Description:

In this class students will learn how to design and paint with underglazes to create

graphic surface imagery on their ceramic work. We will focus on painting and decorating bone

dry clay with techniques that can be applied to functional or sculptural work. We will cover

methods for transferring drawings to clay, using underglazes to create both black and grey as

well as color imagery, color mixing, and blending to create dynamic surface decorations. Our

approach will focus on quality over quantity, where students will pay more attention to surface

details on each piece.

Artist Bio:

Sam Chumley received his BFA in ceramics from Indiana University Southeast in 2017 and his

MFA in ceramics from Ball State University in 2020. His work intersects functional ceramics with

printmaking and painting through a variety of techniques. Sam has exhibited his work across

the United States and Canada including exhibitions and demonstrations with the National

Council for Education of the Ceramic Arts. His work has been published in various ceramic

publications. In recent years Sam has shifted his focus from studio practice to doing more

teaching and working in non profit studio spaces. Sam currently resides in east Tennessee and

works as a studio manager for Arrowmont School of Art and Craft.
