Painting with Underglaze with Sam Chumley - May 7th at 12pm EST

$40.00

Workshop Description:

In this class students will learn how to design and paint with underglazes to create graphic surface imagery on their ceramic work. We will focus on painting and decorating bone dry clay with techniques that can be applied to functional or sculptural work. We will cover methods for transferring drawings to clay, using underglazes to create both black and grey as well as color imagery, color mixing, and blending to create dynamic surface decorations. Our approach will focus on quality over quantity, where students will pay more attention to surface details on each piece.

Artist Bio:

Sam Chumley received his BFA in ceramics from Indiana University Southeast in 2017 and his MFA in ceramics from Ball State University in 2020. His work intersects functional ceramics with printmaking and painting through a variety of techniques. Sam has exhibited his work across the United States and Canada including exhibitions and demonstrations with the National Council for Education of the Ceramic Arts. His work has been published in various ceramic publications. In recent years Sam has shifted his focus from studio practice to doing more teaching and working in non profit studio spaces. Sam currently resides in east Tennessee and works as a studio manager for Arrowmont School of Art and Craft.
